Fundamentals of Palliative Care

Welcome to the Hospice New Zealand Fundamentals of Palliative Care Training Program

The Fundamentals of Palliative Care – Ngā Tūāpapa, o te Pairuri, is a learning package designed for any health care worker, registered and non-registered, who cares for people with a palliative care need. It provides the learner with a broad overview of how to provide palliative care for people with a life limiting illness or in their last days of life.

The program is delivered via a blended model of learning, consisting of online modules followed by an optional one-day workshop offered at Waipuna Hospice. It is recommended that you attend the workshop to further explore palliative care through in-depth conversations, group activities and sharing of resources.

Watch this short (two minutes) introductory video before you get started. It includes what is covered in the programme, how to register, what you need to do to complete the programme and where to go for support.

The topics covered include:
  • The Palliative Care Approach – communication, ethics and spirituality.
  • Long Term Illness – chronic illness and dementia.
  • Managing Symptoms and Introduction to pharmacology.
  • Care and Support at End of Life – last days of life, grief, loss and cultural considerations.
1 DAY WORKSHOP:

The workshop is a full day of learning held at Waipuna Hospice. A certificate of completion is provided.  It is highly recommended to do the online learning prior to the workshop.
