Waipuna Hospice

Waipuna Hospice is situated alongside the Wairoa river in Te Puna, just outside of Tauranga. We have a short stay Inpatient Unit and also care for patients living in their own homes in an area that extends from Waihi Beach to Pukehina. Our Day Services Clinic enables newly referred and the more active patients to come to Waipuna for assessment, treatment and consultations. Our services include family support, education, equipment loan, therapeutic massage, a biography service and a Day Programme. This is all provided at no cost to patients - which is why we rely on our community to help us raise the $2.5 million we need this year to meet the shortfall not covered by government funding. You can help us by attending our events, purchasing merchandise, supporting our Hospice Shops as customers or donors of goods, volunteering...lots of ways!

We are back!

Well, that has been an interesting week. We evacuated the Hospice site on Saturday morning due to the high river levels blocking access to SH2 via Te Puna Station Road. Access via Te Puna Road is completely blocked due to slips.

As the river levels are lower and forecasted rain is at lower levels for the next 48 hours, we have re-opened the site and will today (Friday 3rd February) be accepting admissions to our Inpatient Unit. Please note that during this period of evacuation, our staff continued their excellent community services in patients' homes, resorting to telephone or video consultation when access to properties was impossible or too high a risk. I thank you, our community, for all your support and offers of assistance, and our patients and families for their understanding and perseverance on the occasion when our team could not get out to see you.

It's great to be back on site!
Thank you Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga community!

Hi everyone.
As you may be aware the Wairoa river has receded significantly and that has allowed me on site to see if there is any damage to our buildings and facilities.

The good news is that the main building is unaffected. The site mitigation and stop bank repair we did after our 2011 flood worked!

The not so good news is that the bottom sheds did get some water damage.

So the plan from here...
Due to further heavy rain forecast for Wed and Thurs, and the Wairoa catchment being very water logged, we will be keeping the site closed for the rest of this week. This decision is a tough one and I am making this not due to risk to buildings but more due to potential loss of access along Te Puna Station Road.

We will let you know if circumstances change

Thank you for all the kind offers of assistance and help in the last few days, it is so comforting to get these and to know we have such strong support from our community.

Kia kaha!
Go well and stay safe.
